Lent 2015

Would you like deepen your faith? If so, make the most of Lent.

Come to one of the Ash Wednesday eucharists: 10.30 am St James, and 7.00 pm St Clement on 18 February.

Join a Lent discussion group: The York Course – ”Songs of Praise in the New Testament’ – Wednesdays in Lent at 11.00 am in St James’s church after the midweek Eucharist. From 25 February to 25 March.

Attend a fascinating and informative series of talks about Christians in the Middle East. ‘Walking and Praying with Christians of the Middle East’, Wednesday evenings from 25 February to 25 March, at a variety of local churches (for more detail see the calendar on the green footer below).

Read a Lent book: This Boy, by the former Home Secretary Alan Johnson, which covers his poverty-stricken early life in Notting Hill, including streets in our own parish (discussion at the vicarage at 7.30 pm on Tuesday 24 March).

Make a point of coming to church every Sunday. Lent preachers on 22 February, 1 March and 8 March will speak about their experience of chaplaincy settings in higher education, the prison service and hospitals. On Mothering Sunday (15 March), we connect our experiences of love from our mothers and God. A choir from Norland Place School joins the main service at St James.

Immerse yourself in the liturgy of Holy Week: Palm Sunday (29 March), Maundy Thursday and Good Friday take us on the journey through to Easter.

Attend the midweek Eucharist: 10.30 am at St James.

Use the daily prayer resources on the website: such as www.pray-as-you-go.org – see Services/Prayer.

Contribute to our Gambian appeal: to help fund a health centre, built by volunteers. For more information: http://bace-home.org. Information and envelopes will be available in church. Why not dedicate the money you save from abstaining from something to the Gambian project?

Traditional Lenten commitments include almsgiving, prayer and fasting or abstinence.
