Volunteer with us at a Monday Coffee Morning!

Communicate, The ClementJames Centre’s adult literacy programme, is looking for volunteers. If you are a native speaker of English, would you like to contribute to Monday coffee mornings? These new sessions are an enjoyable way of developing the students’ conversational skills.

Who should attend this activity?

This activity is designed for ESOL learners with varying levels of English who wish to develop their speaking skills in an informal setting outside of class hours.

What does it involve?

An English native speaker volunteer (and a member of the Communicate team) will meet up with a small group of ESOL students on a weekly basis to talk about various topics. Topics may include greetings, holidays, hobbies, family and friends, sports, shopping, work, life in the UK etc.

What are the aims?

By the end of this activity learners will have: a) had practice in speaking for fluency, b) become familiar with a number of items of vocabulary related to various topics, c) been exposed to different varieties of English to aid the development of listening skills, d) increased their confidence when communicating with English-native speakers from various backgrounds.

When and where?

This activity will take place every Monday, from 12pm to 1pm, at The ClementJames Centre.

What else do I need to know?

We are trying to keep the activity as informal as possible, so no prior preparation is required. You would not have to commit to a whole term, perhaps only to three or four sessions in a row, as more volunteers are hoped to be recruited. If you are a native speaker of English and are interested in volunteering, please contact Ender Velasco on 020 7221 8810 or at ender@clementjames.org for more information.
